Here is the transcription of my most recent video blog:
(And here’s the audio on AnchorFM)
Hey friends, it’s Queen Mab, and tonight I am coming to you after I have taken a shower, so you’ll notice that I have this flour sack towel on my head. This is a curly hair technique known as “plopping,” and I will post a link to explain exactly what that is. But don’t worry…this is not some kind of bizarre fashion statement. I don’t have a head injury. I’m just drying my hair, okay?
But anyways, I’m here tonight to talk with you about perfectionism and content creation and advice, okay? Because I just got some very well-meaning but very unsolicited advice about doing less and only posting one video a week and you know, making sure that it’s really good. And for me, the whole point of this exercise is just to show up and not worry about whether or not it’s perfect or whether or not it’s even “good,” okay? Because I think that the secret in this era of the Internet and content creation is to generate a lot of quantity. And it’s true that it might not all be quality, but unfortunately, this is the name of the game.
And for all my life, I’ve been on the other side of that, which was, “Oh, I’m not going to release anything until it’s totally perfect!” And I mean…there are certain standards for certain kinds of projects, you know? Like a solo show or anything that somebody’s paying money to see for sure…I want that to be at a certain standard. When it comes to something like this, though…I’m real sorry, it’s not gonna be perfection, okay?
And to be honest with you, I don’t think people want perfection when it comes to a project like this one. I think people want to see, you know, awkward people like me in my flour sack towel after I took a shower, you know? Isn’t vulnerability the name of the game? Like, where are my Brené Brown cookies, you know?
Anyways, that’s just my opinion, and I just needed to get that out of my system. And you know, I would like to hear from you. Where are you stepping out and showing up and not worrying about whether or not things are perfect? And how is that working out for you? Because believe me, I know there is a dark side. I mean, I just…experienced it…in the form of some unsolicited advice. Anyway – I know it could be much worse. This is the Internet, after all.
So thank you so much for watching this video. If you’d like to see more of my content – some of which is far more curated – you can visit queenmabmusic.com. I’ve got a solo show coming up on October 19 at 7:30pm Pacific. I will post a link to that below. And you can stream from anywhere, or if you’re in LA, you can come to the Santa Monica Playhouse and check it out. Thanks so much for tuning in, and I’ll see you next time. Bye!
