Well, as it says in the good book…ask, and ye shall receive. I asked for requests…and I got a request. And Lori asked for a song…and I made her a song!
For those of you pandeiro geeks who might be interested, I based this beat off of a solo by Jorginho do Pandeiro that I first saw on pandeiro.com many years ago. I’m hesitant to put a video of Jorginho’s playing next to one of my own for obvious reasons…but I’ll do it, anyway, because I really love the musicality and creativity of this solo:
Another pandeiro-related consideration was that Jorginho tends to play starting down on the thumb in more of a samba style, but for the chorus, I needed the funky Suzano style that starts up on the fingers. I decided to keep the pandeiro in a Jorginho orientation and play what I like to call a “down slap” on two and four during the chorus, which for me does not feel especially comfortable or intuitive…but it meant I didn’t have to disrupt the momentum of the jingles. I’m thinking about making another video to better illustrate what I’m talking about because it’s clumsy to describe in words…but again, that may not be very interesting to those who don’t play pandeiro.
Would you like to have your very own personal pain or frustration turned into a silly pandeiro video? Feel free to leave me a comment with a request! Thanks for watching!
