I FINALLY got to interview Lynne Jassem, one of my favorite people from the solo show writing classes I take at Soaring Solo Studios. As I mention in the interview, I’m always very interested in Lynne’s feedback on whatever I’ve written, since she has so much experience as a performer, including but not limited to Edinburgh Fringe, Lincoln Center, and even Perry Como!
I’m especially interested in this show not just because Lynne’s an incredible tap dancer, actor, and comedian, but because it talks about dealing with gender identity issues starting in the late 1940’s. So many people talk about the gender conversation we’re having now as a society as though it came out of nowhere. IT DID NOT – this has always been an issue – and I’m excited to see Lynne’s show to learn more about what this was like before the conversation about pronouns and identity became mainstream.
Also, my personal favorite moment in this interview is when Lynne and I start talking about the differences in teaching rhythm with counts versus sounds, or “scat-singing.” I’m more comfortable with counts, and Lynne’s more comfortable with scatting – but both have their value as teaching tools, and we both discuss learning to teach the other way. What’s YOUR preference for learning to drum or tap dance?
