Here is the transcription of my most recent video blog:
(And here’s the audio on AnchorFM)
Hey everybody, this is Queen Mab. I’m experimenting with using my microphone tonight, so let’s see what happens. Anyway, I have had a very long weekend, so all I’m gonna do tonight is a quick rant about a quote that really bugs me that is ubiquitous. I see it everywhere…especially like, fitness places and like…educational motivational posters. And that quote is…
“Do or do not…there is no try!“
…which Yoda says in…I forget which Star Wars movie. I did a cursory Google search to see if this is some kind of actual Zen saying. As far as I can tell, it isn’t. So that means that George Lucas literally pulled it out of his butt, and frankly, I think that’s where it should have stayed. If there is no try, I would like to know…what is research? I would like to know…what is the process of inventing something. I would like to know…what does it mean to fail in a world where your only option is to do and not to try? As a teacher, I’m really not a fan of this one, and I really wish I understood why other people seem to like it so much.
I’m going to propose an alternate quote, which I think more accurately sums up my own personal point of view on this, and that is…
“It’s the trying that heals you.”
And that quote is from a book called “How to Walk Away” by Katherine Center. Check it out; you’ll probably read it under a day like I did. It’s a very, very fast-paced book. Anyway, what are your thoughts? Does the trying heal you, or is it “do or do not?” What’s your opinion?
